The metopes.

The sculptural decoration of the Parthenon is a unique combination of the Doric metopes and triglyphs on the entablature and the Ionic frieze on the walls of the cella. The 92 metopes depict several myths about Athena such as the battle between the Gods of the Olympus and the Giants on the east side which is also known as the gigantomachy. Other myths which can be seen are the centauromachy on the south side which tells us about the annihiliation of the Centaurs by the Lapiths who were helped by the Athenians, and several scenes from the Troyan war on the north side. Finally the west side is decorated with the amazonomachy which shows us the war against the Amazones who symbolize the Persians, and who were finally defeated by the legendary king Theseus.

The metopes which are displayed below are from the centauromachy, and are taken from
The Parthenon marbles, which is an excellent site about the marbles of the Parthenon.
